Conducting a Communications Audit

What is a communications audit?

An audit is a systematic and comprehensive analysis of an organization's communications. It provides a check point – are you doing what you think you are doing and does it achieve your goals.

You may conduct an audit to assess whether your communications program achieves your goals, conveys your positioning, or reaches your target audience. The results will guide you to make informed strategic decisions about your communications plan. Use the following eight steps to get started.

The Communications Audit Process
  1. Identify audit goals.
Are you reaching your audience? Is your message clear and consistent?

  2. Identify target audiences.
Who can help your organization achieve its strategic goals?

  3. Conduct interviews with key staff/board, stakeholders.
What strengths and weaknesses do they see in your communications program? How do they describe the organization?

  4. Collect all communications materials.
Review and analyze press kits, news clippings, speeches, websites, etc.

  5. Survey target audiences.
Learn what they think and feel about your organization.

  6. Review any relevant polling data or focus group research.

  7. Analyze and interpret information.
Are your messages strong and consistent? Do internal and external positioning mesh or conflict?

  8. Develop recommendations.
Identify new strategies, staffing plan and budget based on recommendations.
